The first post (rather than the last)

Welcome to the first posting of my first blog!

This blog has been inspired (OK, shamelessly ripped off) by my colleague Ross' blog. The aim is to keep a record of the hikes and treks that I've completed. I'm based in Stirling, so most of the routes will be located in Scotland. I'm not a Munro bagger per se, however this will certainly become a theme and I'll no doubt be keeping count.

Who's the blog intended for? Well, mostly for my lovely wife Sameshrie, family and friends. I want to to be able to show people where I've been and what I've seen.

In order to do this I'll be experimenting with online mapping services and uploading geotagged photos. All this is something I should be familiar with given the industry I work in. However it is taking some trial and error and much reading of geeky websites to put together a Google Maps mashup. My first attempt is shown below. This is just a short walk around Stirling on a grey April Sunday afternoon. I had planned on climbing Stob Binnein today, sadly the weather was absolutely lousy so I thought I'd play with blogging instead. Fair weather walking could become a regular pattern!

Finally I hope to be able to make some comparisons of kit, technology, tea rooms, pubs and real ale. For example, in this blog I'm currently using Google Maps and Flickr. Could I do a better job with Bing for the mapping? I do like the fact that I could show OS maps with Bing. Is a bottle of Fraoch preferable to one of Deuchers IPA? Hmm, tricky one that.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy following my travels up hill and down dale.
